We did an English ‘Pray in the Spirit’, Café Emmaüs, with music and profound prayers by Sister Simi and Father Ferry! …

Café Emmaus is a simple initiative inspired by the story of the journey of the two disciples from Jerusalem to Emmaüs (Luke 24:13-35)

and

the words of Jesus himself: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them!” (Matthew 18:20).

We are on our way together!

As Jesus walked with the Emmaüs travelers, so it is with us. We are searching, desperate and have many questions. We do not realize that He is walking with us.

Until we arrive in Emmaüs, does He give us insights? …

Charismatic Prayer Group, ‘Pray in the Spirit’:

Father Ferry decided to give this Café Emmaus event a recognizable name: ‘the charismatic prayer group’. So, we will continue to use this name from now on.

I'll briefly describe the experience of our meeting on October 22nd. It was a fantastic experience. We started at 8:30 PM and there were five of us: Sister Simi, Father Ferry, Narcissa de Jesús, Frieda, and I, Chris. We began with the song, ‘Welcome Holy Spirit’. Sister Simi led the singing. Sometimes singing, sometimes humming, sometimes repeating, sometimes just singing Jesus Jesus Jesus or Holy, Holy, Holy! We continued this for half an hour or more.

Yes, invoking the Holy Spirit. Serena and Natalia arrived later. At that moment, we were engaged in a very personal prayer with the laying on of hands by Sister Simi and myself. Yes, we invoke the Holy Spirit, and Sister Simi shares her feelings. Even though the group was small, it was very intense. Narcissa de Jesús is actually Spanish and doesn't speak English very well, but that's not really a problem when invoking the Holy Spirit. So we did four of these personal journeys, and I can say it was unusual. It's incredibly effective. A lot of personal things were addressed, which were shared in the group.

Then followed a prayer about Jesus being the door. That's how I understood it, and that door is depicted in Banneux. Jesus knocks on our door, but we must open it. Come to Jesus. He will help us. It says in the Bible, in the Gospel of John: ‘I’am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.’ ‭‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭9‬-‭11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

When we enter that door, he comes to us. That coming to us is the Holy Spirit. We go to Jesus, and then He comes to us. We call on Him, and so He comes to us. Amen.

The door is Christ:

This photo, taken by me, Chris, in Banneux. I wanted to add this photo to the article about the "Charismatic Prayer Group" of "Pray in the Spirit," because during that session we referred to Christ as the door.

It is Christ who stands at the door without a handle. We are on the other side of the door. Christ knocks, but we must open it, and when you open it, Christ comes to us. We then receive the Holy Spirit.

He will help us. That's what it says in the Bible, in the Gospel of John, as quoted above!

I also want to share these photos because while Sister Simi was praying and meditating to the Holy Spirit, this image kept coming to my mind.

New initiative, English Café Emmaüs, we call it 'Oase - English', ...

Dear friends, …

With Sister Simi, an Indian religious sister, we came together on Wednesday 21 May. We were three, as organizers, Sister Simi, Father Ferry and myself Chris. We did an English ‘Pray in the Spirit’ with music and profound prayers by Sister Simi and Father Ferry with singing on the guitar. This will be our English wing of Café Emmaüs, we will call it 'Oase - English' for the future.

Sister Simi belongs to an indigenous congregation, the Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate, founded by the late Msgr. C.J. Varkey on September 8, 1962—the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary—at Kulathuvayal in Kerala, India.

Our charism is to manifest the redemptive love of Jesus, with a special focus on family apostolate through family catechesis and the preaching of the Word of God.

Being here in Leuven, I look forward to actively engaging in the ministry of proclaiming the Word of God through meditations and reflections in our prayer groups, spiritual counselling sessions, and by leading praise and worship in group gatherings. Yes, it is the calling of the Holy Spirit for all of us to unite in prayer.

We have decided to come together once a month. Check always the agenda page. And we are going to do a survey to know when it is best to come together. We also have a what’s app group in which we will communicate. Anyone who is interested is asked to join this group. We will also keep you informed via the agenda, …

Letter to Sister Simi, …

Thank you, Sister Simi, for the beautiful prayer moment last night, "Pray in the Spirit." It felt very strong and powerful to me. There were three of us, as mentioned in Matthew 18:20, the basic Gospel text of Café Emmaus. So Christ was present among us. As you also said: the spirit of Saint Damien is palpable here too.

How did it come to me: "We must persevere, the three of us. Grow. Strengthen each other. Keep calling upon the Holy Spirit. Let the miracle happen."

For me, it was and is a "spiritual awakening." Yes, I had an earlier feeling that once came to me, of a very deeply hidden spiritual spirit, within me! We also sang the song "Welcome Holy Spirit," with Father Ferry on guitar. God hears everything, from everyone, as you said. This song and our beautiful prayers are no exception.

We must not be disappointed with the number of people present, but first work on ourselves, until we are finished with ourselves. The number isn't significant at the moment, but it will grow over time. That's how I feel as I write this!

What an intense experience. Thank you again, we must keep going...

Chris

Soup and stories?

It was a beautiful meeting on Pentecost Monday in the Damien Monastery on the Sint Antoniusberg, in Leuven.

Those who were there, thank you. Those who apologized, hopefully until next time.

What was the intention. To get to know each other better as religious and lay people. To build a bridge between those present. To make contact. Across the congregations.

There were six of us, not counting Father Frits, Father Juan Carlos, Father Rémy, Kristien and Father Jef. They were just passers-by.

I took the following spontaneous photo with Father Ferry of the Picpus Order, Sister Soli of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC), myself, Chris and organizer, Kiara of Focolare and Frieda, faithful follower of Café Emmaüs. Diocesan priest Johan thought he should not be on the photo. We did receive a blessing from our priest Johan for what we do and have done for our movement Café Emmaüs.

The intention was to bring people from different congregations together and that worked.  We got to know each other better.

Father Ferry on guitar and the rest singing along at the top of their lungs. Praying a text about the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Fantastic. Then eating soup together with Spanish baguette, followed by a glass of wine and cheese. There were also some snacks. We will continue like this.

Next week we will come together again, in the Damien monastery. In the Spirit of Pentecost we will continue. We are no longer afraid to go outside. The Holy Spirit was among us on this Pentecost Monday and remains among us!

Let us pray for that.

Chris
